Join us in welcoming Dr. Cory Young as he speaks about his research into the ways that Pennsylvania slavery mutated after the passing of the state gradual abolition act in 1780. He will focus his remarks on Adams County, with specific attention to slavery's legal longevity in the region. Although the number of enslaved people in the nineteenth century was not large, it is more accurate to say that Pennsylvania abolished the peculiar institution during the Civil War Era rather than the Revolutionary Era.
Dr. Young is a historian of abolition and slavery in the American North. He received his PhD at Georgetown University and is currently a postdoctoral associate at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. His book manuscript, "For Life or Otherwise: Pennsylvania Slavery in the Age of Gradual Abolition," is under contract with the University of Pennsylvania Press.
