On the morning of July 1, 1863, the Iron Brigade of the First Corps of the Army of the Potomac arrived in the rear of the Lutheran Seminary, ready to enter battle.
Their quick deployment onto McPherson Ridge blunted the Confederate advance along the Chambersburg Pike. For the remainder of that day, these stalwart soldiers helped hold the Army of Northern Virginia west of Gettysburg, buying critical hours for United States forces to concentrate in Gettysburg. By the time the battered remnants of the Iron Brigade retreated to Cemetery Hill, enough men in blue had arrived to begin building the defensive “fish-hook” position that has become legendary in the history of the Civil War.
Donors who contribute $1,000 or more per year (monthly or annually) to Seminary Ridge Museum and Education Center are honored with admission in the Museum’s prestigious
Iron Brigade Leadership Giving Society.
Named for the soldiers of the United States Army who saved Seminary Ridge on July 1, 1863, these leaders in giving provide critical support necessary for our dedicated team to continue our mission of education and preservation.
